Richard's Work

"I have been collecting and painting fantasy miniatures since my introduction to D&D in 1979. I started with a few figures from the Minifigs Dungeons and Dragons range (my first figure was a Hobbit with a sling) and soon added figures from the Ral Partha ES range, and the Fantasy Adventurers, Fiend Factory and Fantasy Specials from Citadel.

In the mid-eighties, as an impoverished student, I fuelled my addiction for lead by painting figures for sale in the local games shop. I ended up selling most of my collection by the end of my course, and I'm still trying to replace it nearly 15 years later.

I am a great fan of the Citadel AD&D and Lord of the Rings ranges from 1985, and of Aly Morrison's sculpting in particular, although the early work of Tom Meier never ceases to amaze me.

Over the years I have experimented with a variety of paints and painting styles. I now use Miniature Paints acrylics over a spray-painted black enamel undercoat. I start painting by blocking in a darker version of the required colour, leaving a black line of undercoat between different colours. I then build up the colour by adding an increasingly lighter shade to the raised areas, until I am happy with the overall effect. This method takes a bit of practice, but it is surprisingly quick to use. I also use traditional washes and dry-brushing techniques.

In the next few months, I hope to complete the painting of my Citadel AD&D miniatures, although I still have a few gaps in my collection. The imminent arrival of a new digital camera should spur on my painting efforts!"
